Does a long term capital loss help offset short term capital gains for reducing taxes? I will have short term capital gains this year from stocks I've bought and sold. I have some stocks I've held long term and could sell for a loss. I have no long term capital gains for this year. I know that federal short term capital gains are taxed as income at about 28% and long term taxed at about 18%. 1) Will selling these long term stock at a loss help to lower the my federal taxation on my short term capital gains? 2) Will each dollar of long term losses reduce my federal short term gains to be taxed by dollar for dollar?
How will my long and short-term capital gains be taxed? Using round figures, my regular job income will be $75,000 and I will also have long-term capital gains of $1,000,000 and short-term gains of $5,000,000. (A rare opportunity I was blessed with.) I think long-term will be taxed at 15%. Do I add short-term gains to my salary to determine my marginal tax rate? Or does my salary alone define my marginal rate? I WILL seek professional advice, but I am on travel for a few months and would like to know what to expect.

Are my recent dividend reinvestments taxed at the short term or long term capital gains tax rate? I have a regular brokerage account (not tax deferred). I bought a mutual fund a number of years ago, and over the years the dividends have been reinvested in the same fund. This year, I was advised to rebalance my portfolio, so I sold all of this mutual fund. Unfortunately, the last dividend reinvestments were within the last year. So the question is, does this reinvestment cause my entire mutual fund sale to be taxed at the long-term or the short-term capital gains tax rate? Or is the recent reinvestment portion short term and everything else long term? If so, what do I use for the tax basis for all of that? It's not the dividends I am asking about. It is the reinvestments of them. When I sold the mutual fund, all of the fund, including the reinvestments got sold. The question is, are each of the small little reinvestments taxed separately, or in one big lump?

An income tax question regarding short-term capital gains/loss!? Let's say I sold stocks for $2000 short-term gains and $1000 short-term loss in this year. But I also have $5000 short-term loss carried over from previous years. Then how much previous short-term loss can be offset this year? Is it $3000 or $4000 (because of $1000 net short-term gains this year)?
Taxes: Long-term and short-term capital gains and losses? Phil has the following long-term capital gains and losses for 2010: $35,000 28% gain, $13,000 28% loss, $18,000 25% gain, and $34,000 0%/15% gain. He also has a $23,000 short-term loss and a $5,000 short-term gain. What is Phil's AGI from these transactions, and if he has a net long-term capital gain, what is its makeup in terms of the alternative tax rates?
Can I use my long term capital gain losses to offset my short term gains? I have about 5,000 in losses on long term stock holdings that I recently sold. I have also recently sold a stock for 2,000 in profit short term gains though. So can I offset these gains with the 5,000 in losses? Then I should have 3,000 left over in losses that I can deduct from my AGI, right? Thanks!
I'm 65. Can short-term capital gains inside my IRA be offset with s-t K losses outside IRA? I'm 65. I have to pay ordinary income tax on all of mine IRA distributions (all my IRA contributions were non deductible). Question is, since the distributions are all related to short-term capital gains in my self-directed IRA stock portfolio, can I offset these gains with short-term capital losses in stock investments outside the IRA, and if this is possible, what IRS forms do I use. Thanks.
Do short term capital gains count as income? For instance, if my income this year was $50K (putting me into the 25% bracket when filing single), and my short term capital gains were $50K, would that bump me up to the 28% tax bracket? Or perhaps I quit my job and only trade stocks, meaning my "income" would only be the interest I make on my bank account, which would put me into the 10% bracket (easily), would that be my capital gains rate, even if I were to make $500K on my short term capital gains. Many thanks.
Can I donate short term capital gains? If I bought a stock and it doubled, could I donate the stock to a charity so I wouldnt have to pay the tax on the gain? or is that rule only for long term capital gains? Short Term Capital Gains in India? If you have 5 lakh of short term capital gains, what is tax due to Indian goverment? Tax due to US government? I understand that there is a tax treaty. Short term capital Gains tax (India) for shares sold in US ? I live in India and I got some stocks listed in US from my company. The option is vested. I sold the stocks in US market. Company deducted Fringe benefit tax based on Fair Market Value (as on date of vesting). My question is how should I calculate short term capital gain and what is the tax rate?
I'm using TurboTax Premier, & after I reported a short-term capital gains my refund reduced drastically! Why? I understand I'll be taxed on capital gains, but I thought it would be at most a 28% rate. They're trying to take more than half of my short-term capital gains! I imported data from my financial institution. Taxable income 117,000. If I leave the information out about the stock sales, refund is ~$2800. After I put it in, with a net short term gain of ~2200, refund goes down to ~$1300. Something seems F'ed up. No clue. I'm thinking TurboTax is wrong big time on this one.
Query on short term capital gains? Hi, Consider a case where I buy 100 shares of company ABC at Rs. 200 each. I get 50 bonus shares and after allocation of bonus shares the share price reduces to Rs. 100. Now if I sell 80 shares at this price ie Rs 100, what will be the short term capital gain/loss? If I decide to sell the remaining 70 shares after one year, will those be completely exempt from tax?
What would be the Income Tax liability for FY 2008-09 under Short Term Capital Gains in this case specific? In the Budget Proposals for FY 2008-09 (AY 2009-10), Short Term Capital Gains Tax has been raised to 15%. If there is net taxable income of Rs. 300,000/= from Short Term Gains only for a non-senior citizen male assessee, no other income or savings, what would be the income tax liabilty for AY 2009-10? Please answer possibly with relevant provisions of the Income Tax Act or with the decided and established case laws/practice of likely similar situations earlier. Do consider that income upto Rs. 1.50 lacs are generally exempt (for non-senior citizen males) and the next slab upto Rs. 3.00 lac otherwise attracts income tax @ 10%.
How can I avoid short term capital gains taxes? I make a significant potion of my yearly income from options trading. I've always wondered if it is possible to avoid or defer the costly short term capital gains taxes. I found some advice here: http://www.finweb.com/taxes/avoid-capital-gains-tax-on-stocks.html but it does not seem to apply to gains made from options investing (or else I am not clever enough to see how it does).

What's the difference between short and long term capital gains? To be more specific, how are they taxed differently? On Schedule D it has you list the short and long term gains separately, but then on line 16 it has you combine the two and enter your gain or loss as a lump sum on your 1040. My question is, if you combine the short and long term gain or loss into one lump sum, how can the two be taxed at different rates?
