I know when you pay stock dividends for instance, you calculate the shares outstanding and depending on if it's large or small, you use SH outstanding times the market or par and NOT the SH issued. Do "stock dividends" rather than cash dividends still exist? This is not a regular dividend, where a fraction of earnings is given per share. It would be, for example, if a company decided to give a 2 percent share dividend, at which point an individual holding 100 shares would receive two new shares and thus hold a total position of 102 shares. Now, do these types of dividends still exist? If so, do any major companies do it (I'd say over 500 mil cap at least, or top few in industry)? Any examples? Thanks for your help.

Any bankers know about paying dividends? DIVIDENDS Bowles Sporting Inc. is prepared to report the following 2011 income statement (shown in thousands of dollars). Sales $15,2000 Operating cost including depreciation 11,9000 EBIT $3,300 Interest 300 EBT $3,000 Taxes (40%) 1,200 Net income $1,800 Prior to reporting this income statement, the company wants to determine its annual dividend. The company has 500,000 shares of common stock outstanding, and its stock trades at $48 per share. a. The company had a 40% dividend payout ratio in 2010. If Bowles wants to maintain this payout ratio in 2011, what will be it per-share dividend in 2011? b. If the company maintains this 40% payout ratio, what will be the current dividend yield on the company’s stock? c. The company reported net income of $1.5 million in 2010. Assume that the number of shares outstanding has remained constant. What was the company’s per-share dividend in 2010? d. As an alternative to maintaining the same dividend payout ratio, Bowles is considering maintaining the same per-share dividend in 2011 that is paid in 2010. If it chooses this policy, what will be the company’s dividend payout ratio in 2011? e. Assume that the company is interested in dramatically expanding its operations and that this expansion will require significant amounts of capital. The company would like to avoid transactions costs involved in issuing new equity. Given this scenario, would it make more sense for the company to maintain a constant dividend payout ratio or to maintain the same per-share dividend? Explain.

How do mutual fund dividends work? I got a dividend today off one of my funds..... it only transacted 1.6 shares! I thought a dividend would transact all the shares I hold. So, the reason it was only a small amount is because of the vast majority of stocks the invest in and only 1 company gave a dividend? Why would they give me such a small dividend I own more than 1.6 shares. The dividend didn't show up on Yahoo's historical prices either OK, I took the total amount earned divided by the total amount held...and got 1/5. I think, that is how much the dividend really was, maybe I am wrong!

How do shares and dividends work? I have a few questions on this. I know the basic idea but wish to know specific details. Companies sell shares in their own company but the people who then buy those shares can sell them on to other people. Why would anyone buy shares currently owned rather than pay it directly into the business it is investing in so it can be used? Surely the price of shares would get a huge increase whenever a dividend is declared because they are guaranteed part of the money back on that date? When a company issues new shares, won't their current shareholders lose out massively. Why would any shareholder agree to increase the number of something that they already own or is it simply to allow the company to gain more money to invest as capital? Sorry if these questions don't make sense. I am starting to get into business and i wish to understand more on these topics. Any additional information will be great. Thank you. :D
