How do I develop more passive income? I want unique ideas to generate passive income. No mlm or shemes, surveys, or other useless crap. I am open to good ideas for a business, but it has to be minimal or no effort for maximum return. To give an idea of what I mean, I bought a peice of machinery that I lease out to a company, I make payments, but they are far less than what I earn from it. Things of this nature. Yes real estate, yes investing, but I am looking for unconventional or interesting ways.

What is a good membership type website that i can build to generate some passive income? I'm a web designer, to minimise outsourcing cost, I try to stick to WordPress websites, however i can outsource to programmers if i need to. I've just found some good membership plugin for WordPress (WP eMember, Magic Member, WishList Member), and I've always wanted to build a website that can generate a bit of passive income for myself. I know if I have a high traffic website I can start putting google ads on it to earn a bit of money, also I can probably charge members to sign up to see certain content on the website. Also I've got the resource to get some good google ranking for any keywords as well. SO I'm just wondering what type of membership type website i can build that can earn me a bit of cash on the side, I just need to generate some sort of monthly passive income. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

how to use $5000 to make passive income? a business or investment, that can generate 200-500 dollars a month without me working over 5 hours a month on it? any ideas?
How can I make a passive income? I’ve done some financial planning lately and realized that I could really use a passive income to cover some costs. I have no problem taking a job, it’s just that I’m 17 and go to a very demanding school and I don’t really have the time. On average, I have maybe 2 hours/day Monday-Friday (tops) which I can devote to earning money (I have more time on the weekends). I’ve been looking into earning money online and I don’t really know which way to go. I’m not sure blogging will make me the income I’m looking for, and I’m not really a photographer, so I don’t think istockphoto will do it either. I’m not looking for a huge income, but if I could make maybe 200-400 $ a month it would solve a lot of my problems. I’m good at writing and anything that has to do with school. Any ideas? I live in Sweden Thanks for all the answers, guys, even though none of them helped. To common sense, I've actually found a way to earn money translating from Swedish to English and vise versa., so...maybe you should change your name.
A good passive income? Hello yahoo users Well does this sound like a good passive income investment. Lets say I buy 4 arcade machines that are quater operated and I have a partner who needs help financially and we make a deal out with each other and he will take care of the 4 arcade machines. And he gets 40% and I recieve %60 of all the quarters in the 4 arcade machines. Does that sound like a good idea.? PS> I am not really going to do this action. I just wanted to know if you think it is a great idea
College job ideas, ones that I haven't heard yet.? My name is Brian and I am 18 years old and about to go to college this coming year. While I’m in college I was hoping to increase the size of my “nest egg”. Leaving college I would like to be in the best possible financial position. The problem for me is my major will be very demanding of my time (10 hour days Monday-Friday) I will be earning a BFA in acting. Having common sense I realize that I won’t be able to trade my time for money (hour/$x) so what are some means of creating passive income? Preferable the ideas I haven’t already heard. I want to thank you all in advanced for you advice, it is very much appreciated. Preferable any venture that does not include or at least rely on the internet.

How do I get started in real estate investing 2 generate income (either passive monthly or quick buy+sell)? I have a pretty decent amount of extra cash available and I want to start investing in real estate to generate passive (rental) income or quick turnaround profit, but I have no idea where to start. The current market seems like it would be a great one to jump into due to very low prices. I read Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad Poor Dad recently. I definitely want to start making my money work for me and not the other way around. He makes it seem so easy to buy and sell properties, especially during a down market, with putting up very little money. I have done some web searching and it seems that there are a ton of real estate investing strategies out there. Any advice, tips, strategies, help, knowledge, recommended reading, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Where can I find entrepreneurs ready to take action? I have just got involved with a company from Europe who offers a global e-commerce business with unlimited passive income potential and no products to sell, they launch here in the US this weekend, but need others to assist me. Earn $ using RV parking in back yard? Have you rented out the RV space in your backyard? Seems like a potential source of income, but just wondering what others have done. Might consider allowing an individual to live here in a mobile home. Perhaps temporary storage for someone's RV? Ideas for passive income? Household includes small children.
Income porfolio? Is it wise to build an income porfolio to help pay for bills so I dont have to worry about them too much? Like for college loans? I am 21 and JUST starting out in the world of investing. It seems like a good idea to build two porfolio's, one based on retirement goals and another based on passive income. Over the years I would contribute to both and use them diffrently. any advice?

Could working Americans get what they want just by saying they want it? A comparatively small yet very vocal group of citizens command political debate on the economy in this country. They are the ones who want broad company profit margins for the benefit of high passive incomes. These people are sophisticated in their knowledge and confident as well as assertive. The larger group(those who work to make active income) want to be middle class and want to come up but are less sophisticated in their knowledge and are much less confident and less assertive. Because of this they are easily intimidated by the former group's arguments. Also because of this the government sets policies that affect market and human behavior the way the former group wants: they decide what a good economy is in society. So idea: If the shortest distance is between two points could workers get middle class wages just by saying confidently that they want them? I have studied this extensively and workers could be much more assertive in their language without hurting business or capitalism(in some cases helping). If working Americans knew what I know could we get the active earnings we want from our economy? Unions totally unnecessary.
I have an idea I wish to patten , BUT HOW? I have an idea for an A F D (animal flotation device ), I'm great at drawing stick figures and because of that deficiency I am studying GRAPHIC DESIGN on my own to be able to present my design professionally. I have done my homework and searched the "Net" the world over and have found NOTHING to come close to my design for "cat" AFD'S . My hopes are to just get a "patten pending" , so that I may start marketing the product for PASSIVE income when I leave to go sail the seas'. can anyone out here direct me into a direction to channel my efforts? I belong to many sailing forums and ALL the polls that I have initiated have given me overwhelming confirmation that MY device would be MOST welcome if placed on the market.! I wish to have my "CAT" as my safe passenger on my "CATamaran" any ideas? in advance? I thank thee. Gaby The product will sell itself with proper "AD SPEAK", I have NO doubt ! Also the procedure seems simple , but the machinations are a conundrum to me . Can anyone assist me with intelligent help? :)

Real Estate Question? Hi, Im geting out of the army and have about 100k to play with. I thought about investing in real estate. Ive got a theory that I could buy 1 big condo in a touristy area like south beach for about 300-350k and then rent it out and live in a little apartment. Is this possible? Or Is it also possible to buy 3 or 4 150k properties and then rent them out for around 1k since the mortgage will only be about 550 bucks a month? Basically im trying to figure out a way that I can gain a passive income and start building on that. I have a mba so I can get a job no problem and live normal, I just want to gain more and more passive income, about 4k a mont, so I can travel in about ten years. Anyone give me ideas? Thanks!

Real estate investment plan question? I'm only 19 and I don't know too much about investing...but I am trying to develop a 5 year to lifetime plan dealing with real estate investments. Originally I already had a plan going with my fiance, and the house he owns currently is mostly paid off and is currently being rented and making some "passive income" (Rich Dad, Poor Dad), but I have to change my plans in more ways than one. Anyway, with the current housing market, and the numerous amount of foreclosures, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to save up money to put money down on a foreclosure (namely in California since the value of houses appreciates so quickly there) and then live in it for a year or so and then rent it out, and repeat the process. Also how exactly does it work when you go to buy a foreclosure? I've heard many different things. And can you suggest cities/states where it would be better for me to do this sort of thing? And is this even a good idea, or do you have better ideas? Thank you!!
blogging for money, how much do you guys make and am i doing okay? i started blogging for money i.e adsense and affiliate commision in september. i have got about 6 blog sites bringing in a tiny amount of cash per month 1 is a bigish one aimed for pure affiliate commision the others are smaller more adsensed based. the first month september i made, 2 cents, the next month after and when i done the other couple i made more than a dollar in adsense the next month i made $25 commison and some more adsense than the last time, the next month i made $35 comission and a bit more adsense than last time by now i had all my blog sites up nd running.last month i didnt make any commission but still about the same amount of adsense as last time. The thing is though the sites bringing in adsense havent been touched in months. i look at it now and realize that about $65 is pretty pathetic over the past 4 months but im still gona keep trying nd the fact that im still dripping in a tiny bit of cash still keeps me going. i dont want to give up. how many of these things do people make online to generate a decent sort of income like $100 dollar a day? thats what im aiming for. i have a part time job but im doing this for a passive income and know its possible. im looking at it in a way now that if i do a hundred more of them i would have roughly hundred times more views and clicks etc.any ideas if you do blog for money online. how am i doing.
How to find undiscovered artists/painters? I need to find several undiscovered artists that are looking to get some online exposure in the art industry and make some great passive income selling giclee reproductions of their work. My business sells predominantly to the affluent female baby-boomer demographic and all of our art is very feminine, elegant, fun and uplifting. That is our niche, so to speak. We're always looking for more artists and would like some ideas how to find those artists. Usually they're mothers and grandmothers that don't spend much (or any) time on the "Gigs" sector of Craigslist and we don't want anyone that is already on ArtistRising.com or anything already established. We've tried word of mouth but have gotten mixed results---especially since it's rather awkward declining the work of a mutual acquaintance, regardless of how polite the "thanks, but no thanks" explanation is. Would love some ideas! Or---maybe you yourself are a painter or know someone! Contact me :)
hey, is there any polyglot/multilingual school in the Philippines? I've just got back from university overseas in U.K., and I was inspired to study as much languages as possible, especially by this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAtWuQmdexs . I'm so fired up to master langauges, and learn to talk about complicated topics and read novels and stuff. Please give me some ideas, any schools out there who teach languages (not just greetings and stuff, but also authentic stuff). I'm hoping maybe you know of a school for polyglots in the Philippines? I plan on mastering 18 different languages in my lifetime Lollz! Anyone out there with the same ambitions who'd like to maybe help me out? I hope I don't get rude comments, like in U.K., they told me to get a real job instead, but I tell them that I'm already earning passive income from my investments and am living within my means, and have no intention to be a filthy millionaire. I want to be able to connect with people all over the world, and talk about various subjects in their language for days! the only problem is, because I'm trying to live within my means, that's why I don't want to spend heaps of money to study in foreign universities in their languages. I plan on mastering before I die: Tagalog (I want to know more deep words), Estonian, Ukrainian, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, German, Dutch, French, Russian, Bulgarian, Finnish, and Hungarian! I'd like to meet any Filipino out there who'd like to be a hyperpolyglot!
$ advice for young couple? I'm a young married couple (33yrs) with 70k in saving and need to invest. Right now, we are able to save about 30k/yr. Our goal is to one day return to live in mexico by the time we're 50 years old(17 years from now) but we must have $ to do that. We were thinking of buying a duplex, as an investment and renting out one unit and living in the other for a few years. It would seem to make sence because once the rentals are payed off, they will serve as a passive income. Does this seem like a good idea? Are what other investment stratagys would you suggest?
If you were me, how you go back to college? I quit college when back when I was 21, I’m 24, and I still don’t think I should go back to college. Now, even my parents have gotten used to the idea I can’t afford to go to college. It was because of the show The Apprentice I was sure I made the right decision, looking at how people with just high-school degrees where more clever and sometimes more successful than Ivy Leaguers. I’ve been working real hard. I’ve been jumping from company to company going to the one that offers me more money. I’ve worked 3 full time jobs and about 18 part time jobs on these 3 years, buying and reselling stuff as on my spare time, and having 1 or 2 part-time jobs one the side. Right now, just on my full time job, I’m making more money than most college graduates my age, and most 30 year olds in my company. I’ve saved for 3 years. Now I have enough money to start my own business. I need to put all my efforts on this new business, and college just seems like a BIG waste of my time just as it did 3 years ago. Does anyone think I should go back to college, or keep on with my plan of having a business, and getting some passive income, and then when I’m about 30 finish college just to have a college degree.
What is the best passive income? Do you have a passive income? Can you share your ideas? http://newpassiveincome.blog.com/
Entrepreneurs, Business owners, college grads? I am a college student and I want to find a way to set up passive income. I want to start a business of my own, not a get rich quick scheme, a legitimate business. I have no Idea what in particular, I am guessing an online business is the way to go, I just dont know how/ where to start. Any input is appreciated.
Is this a good business idea? Hello. I'm 15. I want to know if you guys think this is a good idea. I want to start an online company. So the idea would be to start a web development company. What we would do is create a basic website using webs.com for free. We would buy a good domain name. We would choose a topic, and write a lot of articles about that topic. To make money, we would sell relevant affiliate products and ads on the site. After a month, depending on how much money we made, we would go to flippa.com and sell it for 5 times more. We would create a different website each week, so eventually we would sell a site every week. I think this should be good since we are making passive income for a month, and then selling it for more, and repeating. Do you think this is a good idea? Thanks.
Success Secrets & Truth About ACN. Do you have a story to tell? I want to know. MLM Scam or Not a Scam? Can I quit my day job and be an exclusive ACN rep? Will I make enough money to survive and actually receive a passive residual income as a (ETT) Executive Team Trainer. How will I get leads when I can't "cold call" or advertise? I don't know very many people. Is there any one there who would like to help me, I hate selling but I sure like any assistance I could get. Is Yahoo Answer the best place to look for recruits, results, or referrals? Again, Is there anyone who would like to join me and raise me to become a Team Coordinator? Wouldn't you rather get paid on 2% of 100 of people's efforts than 100% of your own effort. If so, help me. Email me or Visit http://quickstart.acnrep.com and let me know what you think, either way. I want to change my life for a better tomorrow, wouldn't you? Do you have a better ideas? What do you think of becoming a ACN rep or if anyone like me approach you become one? Would you pay an initial fee, if it has a promising future and A+ successes?
If I have $1000 to begin investing in stock? would Costco or Walmart be a good investment? Would it be a good idea to invest all in one or the other or both or neither? I am afraid, but want to start creating a passive stream of income.
Real Mom w/ step grands? My real mom moved away (clear across the country) with my step dad so that they could start a business w/ my step sister and her husband. The idea at the time was that they would help her set it up and then just make passive income from it. It hasn't happened that way. The business is not making money and my step dad has had to work 10-12 hour days for the past three years. There is no hope for the business to be successful, but my step sister is arrogant and pig headed, so she continues to use my step father and mother as her "helpers". How she sleeps at night.. I don’t know. They invested their life savings into the “business” which was really not well thought out and this is how they are treated… Shortly after the move, my step sister had a baby. My step sister is too busy with the business and her husband is too lazy to care for her own child, so my mom is the de facto nanny. She watches the child all day long. My mom says she likes it, but I can tell she is just pretending because she doesn't want to rock the boat. Every now and then, she tells the truth and says that she doesn’t like it, but then I will call her later and she pretends that everything is fine. She will even be slightly condescending as a defense mechanism. It has been this way for about three years. Now, my step sister is talking of having another child and my mom will have to take care of not one, but two kids. This despite that fact that my step sister can not even take care of one child herself because she is away playing make believe with the “business”. The problem is, I am going to be starting a family with my wife soon. My mother will be spending more time raising and visiting her step grandchildren, than with her real grandchildren. This seems wrong to me, but wanted to get other opinions. I don’t know if there is any legal action that can be taken against my step sister.. like a ‘cease and desist your stupidity’ order or something? Can you offer your opinion and advice? Do you think that I should tell my mom that the situation is wrong, or is it not? What would you do? THANKS!
I want to cancel my 401k with Fidelity! Can I cancel, even if I owe money on a loan? I want to cancel my 401k to invest in real estate to get more passive income on a monthly basis. However, I have already taken out a loan, and now owe approx. $13,000 through my 401k. I had bought a property with my money, and now own it free and clear. It is making me more money per month than what I was making on it just sitting there while I was contributing 10% per month. I am not going to depend on my 401k anymore for retirement, as my business idea is making more sense. I want to cancel it, and take my money out. My account is with Fidelty. Can I cancel my Fidelity account, even if I have an outstanding loan balance of $13,000? I am 29 years old. I am aware of the penalties, but I'll re-coop this in no time. Hope this make sense. Thank you
How should I distribute ownership/compensation in my software company? I have a programmer that wants equity in my company. This is a startup company, and we're looking to "bootstrap" it, meaning grow as the money comes in. Our software will be very cheap to maintain, and will sell for 15k for a license and 5k/year thereafter for maintenance. He doesn't want a salary, or money upfront, rather 20% equity, which I think is WAY too much. How can I compensate him in a fair way, possibly based on his performance. He will be leaving the company in 4 years, but wants to build some passive income. How do I not pay hourly, yet hold him accountable for the work, while maintaining all ownership of the idea. As the project grows, there will be more programming needed, and maintenance needed on a regulary basis for each customer. Thanks for the information! Is anyone familiar with phantom stock? How could I award that based on performance? Also, we will be doing this part-time, so a salary of 100k is probably excessive. Thanks!
What's the step-by-step process for me to cash in on my own idea for an Apple iTunes Store iPhone application? Being aware of the increasing popularity as well as the benefits of Apple iTunes Store iPhone Applications or apps, I am interested to capitalize on my own idea for an Apple iTunes Store iPhone application or app since I am not an iPhone developer that's I'm not able to develop an Apple iTunes Store iPhone application myself. Now, whether you're an experienced investor in Apple iTunes Store iPhone applications or are simply an experienced Apple iTunes Store iPhone developer, I would greatly appreciate it if you could kindly explain to me the whole step by step process or procedure for me to turn my idea for an Apple iTunes Store iPhone application into a longterm cash-flow or a passive residual income. In advance many thanks. Best wishes for the New Year!!
Would you consider THIS neo-communism? Actually i just want your feedback as to who's school of thought this is. And I knew that wording would hook you.. Anyway what is this: NO INCOME TAXES on earned income. Government would be financed by passive or residual income alone. The market is why we have a government.! The market needs a common currency and forum for rule making. So let the market pay for it! Consumers would still pay sales/property tax and the market would correct itself. Just fyi, earned income is any money exchanged directly for time / labor. So corporations, investments, the profits off ownership would all continue to be taxed. Businesses would feel some relief though by being able to pay their people less without affecting the take home pay. It is ridiculous that we are getting taxed on our labor. The govt exists for the market. The govt is part of the market. Take the money needed out of the system itself and keep both the system and government self reliant. But support the labor above all else. So top earners would be financing the system. So long as labor thrives the system thrives. The reason that smacks of communism is because it's so empowering to the labor class. It diminishes the financial gap. so yea how would you describe that idea?

Can I deduct these as business expenses? Someone had an idea for what a new product would do. I figured out how to build one. To build a prototype and e-mail him pictures, I bought 4 things: 2 things that I canabalized for parts and 1 soldering iron and 1 camera. The plan is to form an LLC jointly, but this has not yet be done. For several years, I used to do consulting work providing engineering services as an independent contractor and receive a 1099-MISC. I never officially terminated that business, but have not received income from it since becoming a W-2 employee in 2005. Can I deduct the items listed above as business expenses? Are they "supplies" or are they section 179 tangible personal property? Since we have not formalized our relationship, or we a partnership or sole proprietors? What should I check on the box that asks about passive activity versus material participation? I did all of the development and found a patent lawyer (<100 hrs). He solicited manufacturers (with no luck). I canabilized two existing products to use their electrical or electronic circuitry NOT HUMAN PARTS. I want to know if I can deduct the cost of these two items, plus the camera and soldering iron. Also, do I depreciate them, or are they supplies? I also burned the dining room table with the soldering iron or the solder. Is that a business expense (Schedule C) or a personal casualty loss (Schedule A).
How to start a business with very little to no money? Me and a friend are in our freshman year of college, we've really grown fond of the idea of starting a business, but the idea is very developmental so far. I am just wondering what all do you need to start a business, say we have like 300$ and we both still live with our parents etc etc. Our main idea is to start a passive income web-based business, we're both very novice to the whole business concept and we're taking it seriously. We've got a business journal, writing down all possible business ideas, etc. Mostly I just wonder how you get these kinds of things set up, and bank accounts that have money deposited to the account automatically from any funds you get from advertising on the website(s), etc. Thanks! I know this is very vague, me and my friend just came up with the idea and I'm trying to do all the research I can before we pull the trigger on the first one. (Also, how do start a business with a Business Partner? Like, me and my friend both be owners of the business or whatnot. )
Can someone help me with my essay? My tutor wants me to prevent my essay from being a collection of statement? Smoking should be banned in public places This essay investigates the question of whether or not smoking should be banned in public places. The essay will cover the advantages and disadvantages of banning smoking in public places and how people react to this controversial issue. It should be pointed out that this question has been badly debated all over the country and there are many different views. Let us first of all consider the point of view that over 40,000 careful studies have proven that smoking causes disease and death (http://www.ash.org.uk/). Every medical and health agency agrees to the fact that smoking is a problem and an estimated 1,000 people in Britain die every year from smoking-related diseases such as lung cancer and heart diseases. (http://www.guardian.co.ukl) Smoking affects not only smokers themselves, but also non-smokers. Environmental tobacco smoke is known to be a major source of indoor air pollution and the inhalation of it is known as passive smoking. Majority of the ASH (http://www.ash.org.uk) scientific studies have concluded that passive smoking increase the risk of contracting fatal illnesses such as lung cancer and heart problems, and is associated with a variety of health problems in children including cot death and chronic middle ear infections. Based on the findings of the SCOTH (Scientific Committee on Tobacco and Health) report and California EPA review (http://www.advisorybodies.doh.gov.uk);ASH estimates that about 600 lung cancer deaths and up to 12,000 cases of heart diseases in non-smokers can be attributed to passive smoking each year in the U.K. Non-smokers exposed to passive smoke have around a 25% increased chance of contracting heart disease even though on average they inhale the equivalent of 1% of the smoke that a smoker does. Also, the cancer risk for non-smokers exposed to tobacco smoke is approximately in proportion to exposure when compared to the risks faced by smokers. Likewise, in a 1992 report, the Royal College of Physicians estimated that 17,000 children under the age of five are admitted to hospital every year in the U.K. as a result of illnesses resulting from passive smoking (http://www.guardian.co.uk). Also, the impact of smoking on health inequalities is carried from generation to generation. Children whose parents smoke are three times, as likely to smoke themselves and are also more heavily exposed to the harmful effects of smoke pollution. In consequence, children exposed to smoking environments are more likely to go on to become smokers themselves and suffer the ill effect of it. Smoking does not only bring health problems, but also environmental problems. The 1999 office for National Statistics survey (http://www.ash.org.uk/) into attitude to smoking found that 62% of non-smokers would mind if people smoked near them because it causes unpleasant smell, and 38% said that it makes clothes stink. Furthermore, the careless disposal of smokers’ materials is one of the main causes of fire and smoking related litter at home and outside. This evidence supports the point of view that banning smoking would be a good idea as it would reduce all these problems. In addition, according to a 1995 survey (http://www.ash.org.uk/), smoking related litter was found in over 88% of all U.K. surveyed streets and further research showed that only 53% of smokers had ever used a bin to dispose of butts, whilst 75% admitted to dropping them on the ground. Also, the GLA (Greater London Authority) itself recognizes that cigarette butts accounted for 40% of all the street litter in London. This further supports the opinion of those who believe smoking in public places should be banned. Having considered the health and environmental problems posed by smoking, successive expert panels and government committees have emphasized the need for protection of non-smokers from second hand smoke, including the restriction of smoking in public places. The 2004 U.K. Government’s Public Health White Paper (http://www.ash.org.uk/) has already introduced a smoking ban in Scotland in March 2006 which will come into effect this year in the rest of the U.K. According to health campaigners, the Scottish smoking ban has improved trade and lured new customers to pubs three months after the stub-out. Furthermore, the ASH (http://www.ash.org.uk/) Scotland survey found that 24% of customers said they are more likely to visit pubs now they are smoke-free and just 10% would go less often. Moreover, levels of air pollution in Scotland's public places have dropped by 86% since the smoking ban was introduced in March, according to new research. Professor Jon Ayres (http://www.forestonline.org.uk), who is carrying out the study, points out the fact that the smoking ban was always going to benefit workers more. This suggests that the introduction of a smoking ban in public places will be an advantage for workers especially those who are working in pubs and restaurants, yet another argument to support a ban in public places. Soon after the evaluation of the gradual improvements in Scotland, Patricia Hewitt, the Health Secretary, announced a total ban on smoking in enclosed public places which will come into force in England on July 1, 2007, Northern Ireland on April 30, 2007, and Wales on April 2, 2007 (http://news.bbc.co.uk). The smoking ban will cover all enclosed public places such as pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes. However, exemptions include private homes, residential care homes, theatre stages etc. In Ireland like Scotland, the ban has so far proved successful which suggests that in England it may have a similar effect Most people, especially non-smokers agree to a smoking ban in public places. An editorial in the Lancet argued that 80% of people in the U.K. are non-smokers, saying they have the right to freedom from exposure to proven carcinogens. It also highlighted a study by the Royal College of physicians, which said that a smoking ban would help 300,000 people quit smoking (http://www.guardian.co.uk). The results of this study along with the editorial, add even more weight to the argument for banning smoking in public places. Dr. Astrid James, deputy editor of the Lancet believed that banning smoking in public places would prevent cancer deaths as well as heart and chronic lung cancer deaths in the U.K. Not only would this have obvious positive effects on individuals affected by cancer, there would be long term benefits for the NHS i.e. less cancer would mean less money would need to be spent on treatments. John Britton, a professor at Nottingham University (http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk), said that smoking ban in public places will be an effective means of reducing the numbers of people who take up smoking especially young children. In addition, a report from the BMA says that children, pregnant women, people with lung and heart disorders are vulnerable to passive smoking, and that smoking restrictions would protect the population. While there are those who agree with this, there are also those who argue that if people are not allowed to smoke in public, they will be forced into their homes where passive smoking will still affect their families. Although many workplaces already have a non-smoking policy, many people want a total ban on smoking in workplaces. Based on ASH and Cancer Research UK survey, people said that the new law should apply without exemption. The poll showed 85% of people would visit bars and pubs as often or even more often if they were smoke-free by law. Ruth Basworth of Boots Health Club told the BBC, “Everyone has the right to be protected from harm and enjoy smoke-free air”. She added that, “For any smoker trying to quit, smoke-free environments will increase their chances of success as social pressures to smoke will be reduced (http://www.vitabeat.com). So it seems that there is a lot of evidence to support the ban on smoking in public places. However, not everyone agrees that the ban would be effective. In a report by ASH, 20% smokers were revealed as planning to give up the habit, but it also pointed out that more than 80% of smokers who are willing to give up smoking are not influenced by Britain’s proposed public smoking ban (http://www.vitabeat.com). Does this suggest that a ban would be a waste of time? According to a report by the office for National Statistics, the majority of people are still opposed to a ban on smoking in all public places. The report found that 65% of people favored restrictions in pubs but only 33% wanted a total ban; 48% wanted pubs to be mainly non-smoking with smoking areas. It is argued that smokers who freely choose to smoke and are harming themselves, have the right to, in the same way that they are free to choose to take their own lives. Simon Clark, director of FOREST, said that by banning smoking in every public places, the government is ignoring public opinion. (http://www.forestonline.org) A more serious concern is that bans on smoking in public places may lead to more smoking at home, as claimed by former British Secretary of State for Health John Reid. However, the Royal College of Physicians opposed to Reid saying that after investigating Scotland, it has found out that smoke-free households have increased from 22% to 37% within last year (http://en.wikipedia.org). Here we have the point of view that a ban could actually increase smoking at home and may not be beneficial at all. Likewise, an article on smoking on the internet argues that a smoking ban will affect the business of those hospitality companies especially those that allow smoking (http://www.savethegoldfish.co.uk). Furthermore, a report from the Restaurant Association reveals that £346 million could be lost in income and 45,000 jobs if restaurants were forced to ban smokers (http://www.ash.org.uk). The result of this could be a negative impact on the catering industry as it would lessen the number of customers using restaurants which in turn would result in decrease in jobs. Having considered both the arguments for and against a smoking ban in public places, opinion seems to be divided. On one hand, by banning smoking in public places, smokers’ civil liberties are taken away, and on the other hand, non-smokers are being protected from the health effects of passive smoking. At the end of the day, whether smokers like it or not, the smoking ban will be enacted in July of this year, and time will tell it was a good decision by the government or not.
